Who is Information Week for?

Information Week is a magazine that applies to everyone that cares about technology. It has just the right amount of information to keep the average reader interested in it, but at the same time it provides points that are valuable to people actually using these technologies in the work-place. There is a lot that I can attest to learning from the magazine, and I think that it does provide some in-sight that can be beneficial to even novice computer users.

The magazine is well laid out, always has attractive covers, and has articles that are quite good as well. That is why I give this magazine a high recommendation and urge anyone that qualifies to receive this magazine for free to do just that.

For more information on the magazine, or on subscribing to it, take a look at http://www.informationweek.com.

Layout of the Magazine

The magazine itself is split up into a few main sections that give a good fluidity with the reader. It always starts with a section called “up front”, which are quick notes from the Editor and letters that have been sent in to the Editor. It is a personal statement from the Editor and usually revolves around some experience they have had during the week.

It continues with “Top of The Week”, which are what they deem to be 4 or 5 of the top stories coming from the past week. In this given issue, the topics were: Data Difficulties, RFID, Retail ROI, Outsourcing, and News Scans at Microsoft. Each article goes in-depth on the story it is professing, and lends a lot of information to the reader. Following those stories comes the cover story, where story revolves around something important in the Tech. world, and is always entertaining and informational.

The magazine then continues on with smaller stories that can involve software tools, business processes, infrastructures, and data points that they find important to the readers of the magazine. Each section gives a lot of information that I do not find anywhere else.

What is Information Week Magazine?

Information Week is a business innovations trade, which talks about what is up-and-coming in the technology world. This can range from anything involving computers up to “global-supply” management. Pretty much anything that revolves around technology can show up in the magazine, and it seems to find someone interested in each topic.

A Technology Magazine that Updates People on the Industry

Information Week is a great magazine that contains information and knowledge that anyone can use, with plenty of useful information and great articles.

Information Week is a magazine that is published weekly, and can be subscribed to at no charge to the customer. Working in a technology based industry makes the magazine very useful, and it typically arrives on a Thursday, and there are 52 issues that come out per year. It claims to run at a cost of $4.95 in the United States, and $5.95 per issue in Canada, but if it is ordered for “business” use, it is a free subscription.

Learn To Ride A Motorbike

The Introduction Of A New Practical Test in September 2008

© Nicci Talbot

Open Road, istockphoto
Why is a new practical test for motorbikes being introduced this year and what does it involve?

Changes in the law from September 29th, 2008 means there will be a new practical test to pass before you can ride a motorbike. This is being introduced to improve standards of road safety for bikers. There is currently a high injury and death rate on UK roads and the government is committed to reducing the number of accidents on by 40% in 2010.

The new practical test has two elements. Higher speed exercises will be tested on safe off-road sites (at new Multi-Purpose Training Centres). The on-road element follows, consisting of a ride covering a variety of road and traffic conditions and includes stops, angles and hill starts. New special exercises are as follows: -

  • Two exercises carried out at slow speed, including a slalom (cone weaving)
  • Two exercises carried out at a higher speed, at which one should be in second or third gear, at a speed of 19mph+ and one exercise avoiding an obstacle at a minimum speed of 32mph.
  • Two breaking exercises including an emergency break at a minimum speed of 32mph.

Your bike needs to be no less than 75cc for the practical test.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

This was introduced in 1990 to help reduce high accident rates amongst inexperienced riders. You need to do this before you apply to take your practical test. A pass certificate lasts for two years and enables you to ride a bike up to 125cc, restricted to 15bhp (brake horse power). CBT has five sequential elements and costs from £70 - £100 depending on your trainer: -

  • Intro to riding
  • Practical on-site training
  • Practical on-site riding
  • Practical on-road training
  • Practical on-road riding (two hours minimum)

Motorbike Theory Test

This was introduced in 2002 and is made up of two parts: –

  • Multiple choice of 50 questions with a pass mark of 43/50 (you can practise online)
  • Hazard perception test (HPT) of 14 video clips of everyday road scenes in which you have to identify 15 developing hazards. To score highly you need to respond to the developing hazard as in the early stages. The pass mark is 44/75.

How To Prepare For Your Theory Test

Study the Highway Code, Your Traffic Signs, and the relevant book from the DSA’s Driving Skills Series. There is a DVD called ‘The Official Guide To Hazard Perception.’

Once you’ve passed the theory test you can apply to take your practical test.

What If I Want To Ride A Bigger Bike?

Once you’ve passed the practical test you can take the A2 Test, which allows you to ride a bike up to 500cc (33bhp) for two years after which you can ride any cc of bike, if you are over 21. Or, do the Direct Access Scheme (DAS), which allows you to ride any cc of bike without waiting for two years. Before you can do this you need to pass your CBT and theory test.

Group A2: (Standard)
The A2 or 'standard' motorcycle training course is designed to prepare candidates for their motorcycle practical test on a bike of between 121cc and 125cc and capable of at least 62.5mph.
This category of licence restricts the rider to operate machines of 33bhp, ride without L plates, carry passengers and ride on motorways. The restriction to full motorcycle entitlement is automatically removed after 2 years. Our A2 Standard courses are designed for people who have passed their CBT and wish to progress onto larger bikes, carry passengers and ride on motorways. A2 training is of particular interest to riders under 21 years of age who are not eligible for the Direct Access Scheme (DAS

Group A: (Direct Access)
The Direct Access Scheme (DAS) is designed for riders over 21 years old, who wish to ride bikes of unlimited size and power. Training is initially conducted on 125cc bikes, and progresses to 500cc bikes that are used for the practical test.Course lengths are determined by the individual's level of skill and competence - novice riders will naturally require more training than experienced riders! The number of days spent on training is advised by our instructors after a free assessment of your riding skill. They are also happy to discuss your needs as a rider and offer the best training package to meet those needs.

We can train you from complete novice through to riding unlimited bikes, or begin at any point in between. Your first step is to undergo a one day CBT course. From there, we will arrange for you to sit the Written Theory Test, which you must have before your Practical Test. We have the Written Theory Test on computer in our classroom and students may practice as much as they wish prior to the actual test. After an agreed number of days training we will accompany you to a nominated test centre, where you will carry out the Practical Test.

On a bike of over 46.6 bhp to ride without restriction.
Brake horse power does not equate to cc. For restrictions contact your local motorcycle dealer.

Motorbike deaths rise prompts graphic campaign

An image from the 'Look, Look and Look Again' campaign.

A sharp increase in the number of motorcycle registrations coupled with a rise in motorbike road deaths has prompted the State Government to launch a new safety campaign aimed at keeping riders safe.

- Deaths on increase
- Motorcyclists 'extremely vulnerable'

Graphic motorbike safety video

The TAC has released a new ad campaign targeting drivers to look again for motorcycles.

The campaign, "Look, Look and Look Again," was devised to highlight the "extreme vulnerability" of motorcyclists.

Launching the campaign, Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas said there had been a 28% increase in motorcycle registrations from 2002 to 2007.

And so far this year, 35 motorcyclists have been killed on Victoria's roads, up 13% on the same time last year.

"Half of all crashes involving a motorcyclist and a car are caused by the driver failing to see the motorcyclist," he said.

The campaign features a graphic television advertisement urging motorists to be on the look out for motorcyclists.

The initiative, part of the "arrive alive" strategy, was developed jointly with the Victorian Motorcycle Advisory Council, VicRoads and the Transport Accident Commission.
